About This Place

Located in the heart of Albany, Moliendo Cafe is a vibrant culinary gem that transports diners on an authentic journey through the rich and diverse flavors of Latin America, with a special emphasis on Colombian cuisine. This charming spot at 791 Madison Ave masterfully blends the warmth of a traditional steak house and the comfort of a bakery with the fresh, healthy appeal of vegetarian and gluten-free offerings, making it a versatile destination for all palates.

Step inside Moliendo Cafe, and you’ll immediately feel welcomed by a friendly, inviting atmosphere where every meal feels like a celebration. The aroma of freshly prepared empanadas de carne and fried plantains (tostones and maduros con queso) lingers in the air, teasing your taste buds before you even glance at the menu. The vibe is casual yet lively, perfect for family dinners, casual meetups, or solo explorations of authentic Latin American fare.

The menu is a vibrant tapestry of traditional staples, each dish crafted to showcase the distinctive boldness and fresh ingredients characteristic of Colombian and Latin cuisines. For an unforgettable main course, the Bandeja Paisa stands out as a true highlight—generous portions of rice, beans, carne asada, egg, crispy chicharrón, chorizo, sweet plantain, and arepa come together to create a feast for both the eyes and palate. If you're craving something heartwarming, the Sancocho chicken soup is wonderfully flavorful, with a creamy texture that promises comfort with every spoonful.

Vegetarian and gluten-intolerant guests will appreciate the carefully curated options such as the fresh Ensalada de Pollo (grilled chicken salad with avocado) or the Avocado Salad that delivers garden-fresh crispness paired with creamy avocado richness. Seafood lovers will find joy in the Camarones Al Ajillo, succulent shrimp bathed in a garlicky sauce that balances zest and warmth.

On the sweeter side, the bakery section tempts with traditional Colombian treats like buñuelos—fried dough balls that are crisp on the outside and cozy inside, perfect when paired with freshly squeezed juices or a chilled frozen strawberry margarita. The drink menu itself is carefully curated, with vibrant choices including robust Colombian-style coffee, freshly blended fruit juices like mango and blackberry, as well as a selection of beers and sangria to complement every dish.

Reviewers repeatedly praise Moliendo Cafe not only for the food but also for the heartfelt hospitality. One guest shared how the staff’s kindness enhanced their dining experience, making them feel at home even during a snowy evening. Others rave about the generous portions and authentic taste, especially highlighting the lunch specials and unique breakfast options that keep locals and visitors coming back day after day.

Whether you are a devotee of Colombian flavors, a fan of Latin American diversity, or simply searching for a restaurant that serves fresh, soulful dishes in a warm and welcoming environment, Moliendo Cafe is a must-visit. Their seamless blend of traditional recipes, fresh ingredients, and attentive service results in an experience that lingers far beyond the last bite — a true culinary gem in Albany’s dining scene.

We are visiting from Australia and came across this place, and really glad we did. The food was fantastic!! Very tasty, fresh and generous portions. We also got a blackberry juice and mango juice, and they were so good! Waitress was very friendly, and helped us pick our meals. Thank you!! We definitely recommend.

Pandebonos and buñuelos are nice. The chicken soup is flavorful and almost creamy. Just fyi the daily specials have a lot of beans and the arepas dishes are unseasoned and not sauced (which I'm not used to)

I walked in late on a snowy evening and they graciously seated me very close to closing time. I had the Arroz con Camarones and it was excellent. I will be back next time I am in Albany.

Our family had a perfect experience at Moliendo Cafe last night! We were welcomed in, seated, and taken care of beautifully. We had specials 1, 3, and 4, fried plantains with guacamole, and mango and passion fruit juices. The specials came with beef rib soup that was bonkers good! Everything was delicious! We're already talking about returning. Thank you, owner John, our wonderful server, and all who took part in our time there. Gratitude for your generosity of spirit and your outstanding hospitality!

Decided to try this place for lunch. They have a good array of lunch special for $11.99 from 11 am to 3 pm. We were not disappointed. Carne guisada and grilled steak were delicious. Rice and beans were very favorably as well. Good service as well, will definitely be back.
